  10. NOTE: If you are a new user, skip to the "Intrduction Section." If you have 
  11.       already used the MegaSTE Configuration Set, check out what is new 
  12.       below.

  14. --> What's new?
  15.  
  16.     Well, I found a small problem with the programs FAST.PRG, FASTNC.PRG,
  17. NORM.PRG. Basically, when these programs were run from a non-MegaSTE 
  18. machine, they would bus error. Oops! Sorry, I forgot an equal sign in the
  19. code! Anyway, that is now fixed. I think the only people that would care 
  20. about this change would be people that have the possibility of runnning 
  21. these programs from the AUTO Folder on two different machines (i.e. Off
  22. a SyQuest Drive or other removable hard drive).

  24.     Anyway, that is all that has changed. If you have any suggestions, 
  25. please let me know.

  27.     One other comment.. You can change the names of these programs to 
  28. .TOS to run them from a shell. This has always been true.

  30. --> Introduction

  32.     The MegaSTE Configuration Set is a collection of small programs that 
  33. will set up the Cache and Speed Configuration for your MegaSTE. The 
  34. programs are: FAST.PRG, FASTNC.PRG, NORM.PRG, and WHATAMI.PRG. I will 
  35. explain exactly what these programs do later in this READ.ME file.

  37.     If you do not own a MegaSTE, then these programs are probably of no 
  38. use to you. However, please feel free to pass them along to someone who 
  39. might find them useful!

  42. --> A Word on Distribution
  43.  
  44.     These programs are being distributed as "shareware." This means that 
  45. you are free to give these programs to anyone, upload to Bulletin Board 
  46. Systems, USEnet, etc. as long as ALL of the programs (FAST.PRG, FASTNC.PRG,
  47. NORM.PRG, and WHATAMI.PRG) and this READ.ME file are included and NOT 
  48. altered in any way. In other words, feel free to distribute this program 
  49. far and wide as long as you leave it just as it is now.

  51.     Since these programs aren't very big and they don't do a whole lot, 
  52. I am not asking for alot of money for them. If you use them and you find
  53. them useful, I ask that you send me $5.00 dollars. This small sum will 
  54. help me to cover the 40 percent increase in my tuition costs (Here in 
  55. California, the California State University System was forced to raise 
  56. their tuition 40 percent this coming year due to State Budget problems!). 
  57. Remember, shareware programs are being distributed on the honor system. 
  58. If you use them, you are expected to pay for them.

  68. --> What are these programs anyway?
  69.  
  70.     I'm glad you asked! These programs are a result of some messages I
  71. read on GEnie, where users wanted to change the Speed and Cache settings
  72. of their MegaSTE machines without having to have the new Control Panel 
  73. loaded. They wanted the best of both worlds: they wanted to change these
  74. settings and have the memory available that the Control Panel would 
  75. normally take up.
  76.  
  77.     Before I continue a note about the Control Panel: The Control Panel
  78. is a really great tool. It is expandable and allows you to FULLY configure 
  79. your system. These programs are in NO way designed to replace the
  80. functionality of the Control Panel. If you want more than these programs 
  81. offer, consider using the Control Panel.

  83.     Anyway, after thinking about these GEnie messages, I did some research
  84. and started to write the collection of programs you now have.

  87. --> Okay, they set the Cache and Speed settings. But, what do each of 
  88.     these 4 programs do?
  89.  
  90.     Wow! You ask great questions. Let me see if I can break down each 
  91. program and tell you what it does:
  92.  
  93.     - FAST.PRG
  94.  
  95.         FAST.PRG will put the MegaSTE into 16Mhz mode with the 
  96.         Cache Enabled. I called it FAST, because it will make the 
  97.         machine run fast! 
  98.  
  99.         When you run the program, it will tell you (in the form of 
  100.         an Alert Box) that the machine is set to 16Mhz and the Cache 
  101.         is Enabled. After you click on the "Thanks" button, the 
  102.         program will exit, taking you back to the Desktop.

  104.     - FASTNC.PRG
  105.  
  106.         FASTNC.PRG will put the MegaSTE into 16Mhz mode with the 
  107.         Cache Disabled. Thus the "NC" (for No Cache) on the end of 
  108.         filename.

  110.         Just like FAST.PRG, this program will display an Alert Box 
  111.         that tells you that your MegaSTE is now running at 16Mhz 
  112.         with the Cache disabled. After you click on the "Thanks" 
  113.         button, the program will exit, taking you back to the Desktop.

  115.         When this program is executed as a TOS program or put in the
  116.         AUTO Folder, it will not display the Alert Box. Instead, it
  117.         will display roughly the same message in text form.
  118.  
  119.     - NORM.PRG
  120.  
  121.         NORM.PRG will put the MegaSTE into 8Mhz mode with the Cache 
  122.         Disabled. I called this program "NORM" because this would be
  123.         "normal" for an STE or ST computer. Regular 1040STE or ST 
  124.         machines run at 8Mhz and don't have a Cache.

  126.         NORM.PRG displays an Alert Box telling you that your MegaSTE 
  127.         is now running at 8Mhz with the Cache Disabled. Click on the 
  128.         "Thanks" button to exit the program and return to the desktop.

  130.         If you execute this program from the AUTO Folder as a TOS 
  131.         program from a CLI shell, you won't see the Alert Box, but 
  132.         the program will print roughly the same message in text form.

  134.     - WHATAMI.PRG
  135.  
  136.         WHATAMI.PRG is a program that when executed will tell you 
  137.         what speed and cache configuration you are currently in. 
  138.  
  139.         When you run this program it will display an Alert Box that 
  140.         tells you the speed and cache setting. Click on the "Ok" 
  141.         button to exit the program and return to the Desktop.
  142.  
  143.         If this program is executed as a TOS program or put in the 
  144.         AUTO Folder, you won't see the Alert Box, you will see roughly 
  145.         the same message in text form.

  148.     All of these programs will work on a MegaSTE in _any_ resolution.
  149. They will run from the AUTO Folder, the built-in GEM Desktop, CLI 
  150. environments, etc. The only limitation is that they do not run as 
  151. Accessories. Also, when these programs are run in TOS Mode (or the
  152. AUTO Folder), the message that they display is only one line. I wanted
  153. to keep it small, because I don't really enjoy seeing these 
  154. "half-screen" welcome messages from AUTO Folder programs.

  156.     If you happen to attempt to run these programs on something other
  157. than a MegaSTE, the program will tell you that the programs only work
  158. on the MegaSTE and exit gracefully. Go ahead, try to run these programs
  159. on other ST compatible computers! I dare you! <grin>

  161.     On a serious note, if you find _ANYTHING_ wrong with these programs,
  162. please let me know. I want to make sure that this software is useful to 
  163. you and bug free.

  168. hope that you will find these programs useful. If you do, please try to
